It’s funny that we all seem to be in support of what companies like BP do: we want cheaper stuff. Why should we pay more, why should we ask for good work conditions and care for the environment if our neighbor buys the cheap stuff anyway? We want less taxes, less government, less everything. What happened is our fault, but we all happily blame BP. “The Government” is us, it carries out what we, as a community, tell it to do. The problem of our time is, that there is no we, no community, anymore, it’s all about me, me, me. What the fuck should I care about the Gulf of Mexico, I don’t see any oil in my garden.

This saddens me most: that we all cry out in shock when catastrophes like these happen, but that we secretly really don’t care as long as everything stays cheap.
